I believe that should be an option in iMovie as well. I think you can also zoom in the timeline view to expand the clip on the timeline, and possibly see more of the clip. You can choose a thumbnail for your finished video upon sharing/saving it. The clip thumbnail, even the blank one is just a random thumbnail, it has no effect on the editing process or the final video. As long as you can still edit the clips on the timeline normally, as you implied, and cut out all the bits you don't want. Or it could have something to do with the kind of source material you've imported.Įither way, I don't think it's anything to worry about.

In iMovie on iPhone or iPad, the highest quality clip in your project determines the resolution for your movie. You can always add videos and photos to your project after you initially create the movie. If you didn't add videos or photos, the timeline is blank. Videos or photos you selected appear in the timeline. To browse more video clips, photos, and albums, tap Media, then tap another folder.
