So the entire clip is all black but you can still play it and see the video? I believe that should be an option in iMovie as well. I think you can also zoom in the timeline view to expand the clip on the timeline, and possibly see more of the clip. You can choose a thumbnail for your finished video upon sharing/saving it. The clip thumbnail, even the blank one is just a random thumbnail, it has no effect on the editing process or the final video. As long as you can still edit the clips on the timeline normally, as you implied, and cut out all the bits you don't want.
